<image:title>Guests - Keith Muscutt: Researcher and Author of "Warriors of the Clouds: A Lost Civilization in the Upper Amazon of Peru" (Ep. 70) - Keith Muscutt</image:title>
<image:caption>Keith grew up in the East-End of London after the War — a grim place, scarred by the blitz. He first experienced archeology as a kid, digging for treasure in his back yard, finding a brass button dating back to the Napoleonic wars, and wondering how it got there. Scholarships, grants and, fellowships enabled him to study at a “public” (meaning private) school in England, a “prep" school in the USA, then University in England, and eventually graduate school in the USA where he studied theatre and playwriting in particular. Unable to make up his mind about what he wanted to do or be, or perhaps wanting to do and be too many different things, he traveled widely and tried his hand at many endeavors, failing more often than not. Along the way he became a playwright, theatrical scenic and lighting designer, photographer, inventor, author, sculptor, documentary-film maker, music software-developer, usually earning a living as a university teacher and administrator. His passion for archeological exploration led to a lifelong interest in the people and ancient cultures of Peru. He now lives in Santa Cruz, California where, while digging in his garden, he recently found a rusty horseshoe. It reminded him of the brass button. He wonders where it is now. <image:title>Guests - Dr. Steven Levitt: Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago and #1 NYT Best-selling Co-author of "Freakonomics" (Ep. 67) - Dr. Steven Levitt</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Steven Levitt is a professor of economics at the University of Chicago, host of the podcast “People I Mostly Admire,” and a #1 NYT best-selling co-author of the book Freakonomics. Have you ever heard or asked a strange question that connects seemingly unrelated topics? Like what do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? Well, in the bestselling book Freakonomics, Dr. Levitt and Stephen Dubner explore the hidden side of everything. They take old economics and show us how interesting and peculiar all of the puzzle pieces that make up the field of economics can really be. Fewer textbooks and numbers, and more correlation and real-world application in ways you never would have thought of! Dr. Steven Levitt is changing the way we see economics, and showing us not to judge something at first glance. <image:title>Guests - Jim Clash: Forbes' Extreme Sports Contributor (Ep. 65) - Jim Clash</image:title>
<image:caption>Jim Clash writes about extreme adventure and those who do it at Forbes. Journalists and writers usually interview, write, edit, and then repeat in order to produce quality stories. However, writer Jim Clash decided that interviewing the daring people who perform impressive athletic and adventurous stunts wouldn’t provide enough insight into exactly what they were accomplishing. Instead, Mr. Clash decided to step out of his comfort zone and take part in the escapades he writes about! From bobsledding with an Olympic team to getting shot while wearing a stylish, bulletproof jacket, he’s done a variety of impressive and crazy feats in his time as a writer. Jim Clash not only provides us with entertaining articles, but he also helps us understand some of the crazy accomplishments out there in the world. As he says, he truly has the best job ever. <image:caption>Lucas Caneda is a professional rugby player and director of Uniqorn. Most people have a dream that they’ve latched onto ever since they were little. While they try to be realistic, a tiny part of them always lurks in the shadows and keeps the dwindling flame of hope alive. However, most people don’t take the risk or next step to achieve what they truly desire. Lucas Caneda shows us that we can accomplish anything if we truly set our minds to it. He nurtured his love and talent for rugby just like he nurtured his flame of hope that rugby might become his professional career. Six years later, he is still going strong and even branching out as the director of Uniqorn Incubator! Lucas Caneda took that daring next step to follow his passion. Now, he shows us the benefits that can come from following that daunting “what if.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>David Ishee is a dog breeder and biohacker. Have you ever stopped to think about how many different types of dogs there are in the world? You probably could name at least a dozen breeds of varying sizes, colors, and textures. Humans have bred dogs for thousands of years, but over time we have let dogs develop detrimental, genetic diseases. David Ishee believes that action needs to be taken to help fix the problem we have created, so he is using a gene-editing technology called CRISPR to try and prevent future generations from possessing those harmful conditions. People all over the world love and cherish dogs, as does Ishee. David Ishee is trying to help the furry creatures we all love healthfully endure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tim Harford is the Financial Times columnist, BBC broadcaster, and author of nine books (most recently How To Make The World Add Up/The Data Detective) and the podcast Cautionary Tales. Having statistics and data in a book or backing up an argument instantly makes it more credible. People are more likely to agree with you if you have study after study proving your point. However, we have gotten to the point where people can be weary of statistics and data. They believe that numbers and studies are used to mislead us and take us down a path of deception. That their only purpose is for us to believe and then spread the authors concepts or ideas. Tim Harford, author of The Data Detective, shows us how powerful and fun statistics can be if we use them correctly! Statistics can be used for good and not just to mislead the ignorant. Tim Harford is helping us all take a little step back and embrace the data and statistics that we are usually so skeptical to believe. <image:caption>Josh Sakhai is the co-founder of Ephemeral Tattoos and a Thiel Fellow. Throughout his life, he kept asking why. Why was the sky blue? Why did this work this way? Then he met up with one of his friends and heard his story of the painful and expensive process he went through to get a tattoo removed. So naturally, Mr. Sakhai asked why. Why are tattoos so painful and expensive to remove? Is there any way to solve that problem? Along with a couple of other grad students, he started Ephemeral Tattoos. They created innovative ink that naturally fades away after about 9-15 months so that you can enjoy a tattoo without the long term commitment. Along with their incredible ink, they also created a retail business, so that their customers have the best possible experience. Josh Sakhai asked why, and now he is revolutionizing tattoos and making the overall process of getting a tattoo more of a pleasurable experience. <image:title>Guests - Dr. Ken Kamler: Explorer, Surgeon, Fellow in the Explorers Club (Ep. 26) - Dr. Ken Kamler</image:title>
<image:caption>Ever since Dr. Ken Kamler, an orthopedic microsurgeon and Fellow in the Explorers Club, found a random book with a weird name on his dad’s bookshelf that just so happened to inspire him, his life has been the definition of adventure. From Everest to Peru, he has traveled all over the world on various expeditions. Dr. Kamler has documented many of his adventures in his books. In one of these books, he records his experience as one of the only doctors on the mountain during the 1996 Everest tragedy which was later turned into the movie, Into Thin Air. However, he never envisioned himself sitting on The Oprah Winfrey Show as a full hour guest talking about his adventures. Before he was well-known for research on surviving the extremes, Dr. Ken Kamler signed up for a rock climbing class. He knew that that class would be the first part of achieving his dream which had been awakened by a random book that he happened to pick up. In this week’s episode, Dr. Kamler explains his practical advice for conquering one’s goals. Even if they are the size of Everest. <image:caption>While Mr. Epstein is an investigative reporter, he is also a successful author who thinks out of the box. He noticed people tend to overspecialize like athletes, musicians, inventors, scientists, etc. In order to be the best, a person needs to be exceptionally focused and not stray off course. However, after much research, Mr. Epstein came upon a startling conclusion. He discovered it is better to be a generalist which sharpens senses and flourishes creativity. This perspective is discussed extensively in his popular books, The Sports Gene and Range, which won Mr. Epstein the honor of becoming a New York Times bestselling author. David Epstein is breaking down preconceived notions and shedding light on widely accepted, flawed ideas. He is also the former senior writer for Sports Illustrated. <image:title>Guests - Paul Jarvis: Author of “Company of One” and Entrepreneur (Ep. 14) - Paul Jarvis</image:title>
<image:caption>Most people think that growing your business to be the biggest it can be is the best thing to do. You’re a more successful entrepreneur if you have tons of employees across dozens of different countries. Paul Jarvis has looked at this idea and come up with his own conclusion. In his book Company of One, he explores how having a smaller business is the next big thing for the business world. He says that having a smaller business will let you determine your hours, how you spend your time and your money, and (most importantly) what you want to do with your business. Mr. Paul has put this into practice in his own life. He runs a successful software business while purposely turning down investors. Paul Jarvis is disrupting the normal business stereotype and showing everyone how being small is actually good. <image:caption>Mr. Tyler Kluver is a former, Hawkeye football long snapper and the host of the Washed Up Walkons podcast. Finally, after tons of hard work and his graduation, his goal was reached. After walking on to the Hawkeyes, he became the starting long snapper. His story of inspiration doesn't stop there. More recently, during the pandemic, Mr. Kluver was laid off. However, he leveraged the fan support he had earned from becoming a college football player and started his own fitness business, which has turned out to be pretty successful. Hard work really does pay off. Check out his full bio: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tyler-kluver-509781113/ Washed Up Walkons: https://www.thewashedupwalkons.com/</image:caption>
